MathCounts Week Notice Announcement

MATHCOUNTS® is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school student interest in mathematics achievement. More information regarding the MathCounts program can be found at www.mathcounts.org. School-based teams composed of four students compete through chapter, state and ultimately the national competitions. Illinois' program is one of the largest in the nation. Local MATHCOUNTS competitions are sponsored by the ISPE Chapters during the month of February. Winning teams from the chapter-level competitions move on to the Illinois State competition held in March. The top 4 State winners advance to

2021 MATHCOUNTS Competition

Due to COVID-19, this year's MATHCOUNTS Competition Series has been modified.

Between 1 and 15 individuals from each school participate in the 2021 Chapter Competition, which will be available online February 5 at 1:00pm ET through February 6 at 1:00pm ET.

The top scoring student from each school and the top 20% of individuals from each chapter advance to the 2021 Chapter Invitational Competition, taking place online February 25 at 7:00pm ET.

The top 5 students from each chapter and the 10 next highest scoring students in the state (based on their scores on the Sprint and Target Rounds) advance to the 2021 State Compe­tition, taking place online March 25 at 7:00pm ET.

The top individuals from each state receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2021 Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS National Competition, which takes place May 8-11 in Washington, DC.

The National Champion and First Place Team are determined during at the 2021 Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS National Competition.

2020 Lake County Chapter Competition Results

A team of middle school Mathletes® from Daniel Wright Junior High School in Lincolnshire won the local 2020 MATHCOUNTS Lake County Chapter Competition held on February 22nd at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. 107 students from across Lake and McHenry counties participated in the Chapter Competition this year.

MATHCOUNTS is a combination math coaching and competition program designed to address the problem of declining math skills among U.S. students. Teachers and students have been preparing for the Chapter Competition since the fall. The 6th, 7th & 8th grade students were tested on such topics as probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials.

The winning Mathlete® Teams and Individuals received special awards in recognition of their achievement and will now advance to the State Competition, to be held at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois on March 7, 2020. The top four Individuals at the State Competition will represent the State of Illinois at the 2020 MATHCOUNTS National Competition to be held May 9‐12, 2020 in Orlando, FL.

Members of the winning Daniel Wright Junior High School Team from Lincolnshire are Angela Guo, Vedanti Joshi, Keona Liu, and Vedant Rathi. The second place Team of Raghav Agrawal, Krish Chatterjee, Jaden Chen, and Alice He are from Aptakisic Junior High School in Buffalo Grove.

The top two scoring competitors were George Lu from Highland Middle School in Libertyville and Angela Guo from Daniel Wright, respectively. George Lu from Highland will advance to state as an Individual.

Angela will advance to State as a member of her school’s team which also placed. Each Chapter is allowed to send the top 2 scoring competitors to State that are not on a Team advancing to State. Eric Tsui from West Oak Middle School in Mundelein was the next highest scoring competitor not on a Team advancing to state. Eric will advance to state to represent the Lake County Chapter as our second Individual.

Following the written portion of the competition, the 16 highest scoring competitors participated in a fastpaced, timed verbal Countdown Round. Trophies were awarded to the top 4 finishers. Vedant Rathi from Daniel Wright won first place, Krish Chatterjee from Aptakisic placed second, Aaroh Tak from Daniel Wright placed third, and Aaron Gan from Daniel Wright placed fourth.

On behalf of the volunteers coordinating the Lake County Chapter Competition, we would like to sincerely apologize to George Lu, his parents and to his coach for his omission from the Countdown Round. A special award is being prepared for George to represent his outstanding sportsmanship at the competition.

Leadership of the local MATHCOUNTS program is provided by members of the Lake County Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers.
